The space elephant embodies the Dalínian symbol
that was born in 1946 when the artist painted one of
his most famous pictures - The Temptation of St
Anthony. This painting was created when a film studio
commissioned eleven artists to produce a painting on
this theme. For his contribution, Dalí created the
image of an elephant, moving through space and
carrying an obelisk; a symbol of power, domination,
and technology. According to Dalí, St Anthony would
have been visited by the temptations that he had
renounced - art and beauty, power, erotic pleasure
and knowledge. Dalí painted these temptations as a
procession led by a rearing horse, a phallic symbol of
mastery of one person over another. Four elephants
stand on almost invisible spider legs parading before
St Anthony and the temptations of desire. For this
sculpture, based on the elephants in the painting, Dalí
chose the temptation of power.
